Annual Conference of the Academy for Ethics in Medicine (AEM) 2025
09 Oct 2025 - 10:00 am - 11 Oct 2025 - 1:00 pm

Under the working title: "Ethics of health technologies: Science, Society, Healthcare" from October 09 - 11, experts from medicine, care provision, ethics and philosophy will discuss and network on the ethically and socially responsible development and introduction of new healthcare technologies.
New technologies in healthcare can bring enormous benefits for healthcare professionals, patients and the public. At the same time, they must be developed, introduced and used in an ethical and socially responsible manner. The challenges and opportunities of healthcare technologies have been scientifically investigated for years; in practical application in various areas of healthcare, they have an immediate and direct impact on treatment concepts, processes and costs. The responsible development and application of new technologies requires better digital infrastructure, new concepts for handling data, as well as successful knowledge transfer, implementation and monitoring.
For ethics as a science, new tasks arise with the new health technologies. On the one hand, it is a matter of scientific analysis, on the other of forward-looking design, so that new technologies do not worsen healthcare or disadvantage people through their use. This means accompanying the introduction and use of new technologies, promoting a practical examination of the risks, monitoring the implementation of their use and supporting their further development.
What new health technologies do we need - as a society, as researchers, as professionals? What normative goals should they serve? What prerequisites are essential for the development and use of new technologies in healthcare? What do healthcare professionals and patients need in order to use new technologies safely? How do we shape the interactions between humans and machines in the provision of care in different areas of healthcare and public health? How can we use new technologies in diagnostics, prevention, treatment and care responsibly, safely and fairly? How can we assess and evaluate their use in the future? How can ethical standards be rethought and further developed for the future and how can their observance be ensured in technology development?
