IHEM external speaker: public zoom access to Eduard Fosch Villaronga’s talk
17 Jul 2024 - 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm
The IHEM is happy to host Eduard Fosch Villaronga of the Leiden University for a new edition of our external speaker series with the following topic:
Knowledge for Robot Policy
There is an increasing gap between the policy cycle’s speed and that of technological and social change. While the EU has recently passed the AI Act, a particularly unattended area is that of robotics, where policies are scattered and cover robots‘ entailed issues unevenly.
The main driver of this disconnection is the significant information disparity. If these asymmetries persist, technology companies will maintain control over how their products operate, while underfunded and understaffed regulators will continue to struggle not only to comprehend the technology but also to express their concerns. This leads to policies lacking crucial safeguards, robot developers neglecting to incorporate essential legal considerations into their designs, and user safety not always guaranteed.
In this talk, Dr. Fosch Villaronga will present his model on Knowledge for Robot Policy, a steppingstone in ideating practical ways to link robot experimental settings with the policy cycle to help overcome such information asymmetries, give voice to end-users, and shed light on what needs regulatory attention for adequate robot governance.
Dr. Eduard Fosch-Villaronga Ph.D. LL.M M.A. is Associate Professor and Director of Research at the eLaw Center for Law and Digital Technologies at Leiden University (NL). Eduard is an ERC Laureate and investigates the legal and regulatory aspects of robot and AI technologies.
The talk is open to the public online: If you would like to attend, please use the following Zoom dial-in info:
