Am 25.01.2023 ist Brigitte Strahwald (MSc Mmel), Koordinatorin Pettenkofer School of Public Health an der Luwig-Maximilians-Universität München, zu Gast bei unserer institutsinternen Speaker Series. Sie spricht zum Thema „Policy advice in the COVID-19 pandemic – a public health perspective„.

Description of the talk

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020 policymakers had to make far-reaching decisions under uncertainty and enormous time pressure. Scientific experts were therefore asked for advice, but both the selection of individual persons and the composition of the pandemic councils and committees raised questions about transparency, legitimacy and representativeness. On the science side it was often unclear how the – mostly limited – evidence could be communicated to decision-makers and how political decisions can or may be influenced at all. Several research projects on this topic have been carried out at the Chair of Public Health and Health Services Research at the LMU, a WHO Collaborating Center for Evidence-Based Public Health, which are presented here and put up for discussion.

Speaker bio

Brigitte Strahwald coordinates the development and expansion of the Pettenkofer School of Public Health (PSPH) at the LMU. In research, teaching and practice her focus is on (public) health and risk communication. She is particularly interested in data and information visualization, as well as ethical and evidence-based decision making, from both medical and public health perspectives. This includes a critical look at algorithmic decision support systems, especially on the communication of uncertainty and on gender bias. Brigitte Strahwald has a background as anesthesiologist and holds both a Master in Epidemiology and in Medical Ethics and Law. She is co-founder of an agency for health communication.

This event is organized by the Institute of History and Ethics in Medicine (IHEM), School of Medicine, Technical University of Munich under the direction of Prof. Alena Buyx. It is a hybrid format, held simultaneously in person and online via Zoom. If you would like to attend in-person, prior registration is mandatory.
