Author and director Robert Icke has congenially translated Arthur Schnitzler's play "Professor Bernhardi" (1912) into the present day. The London "Times" celebrated "The Doctor" as an "open-heart surgery of our present, which becomes more complicated the deeper you cut". Icke plays masterfully with the expectations and experiences of the audience, because with every change of perspective, it is not only necessary to reinterpret what is happening, but also to question one's own convictions.

The panel discussion

In the play "The Doctor" by Robert Icke, central ethical issues are addressed:

  • "Our institute is not a bazaar of individual opinions ... We are a team."
  • "As a doctor, I look deep into the human identity."
  • "Hope is there when it's there."
  • "Death is when there is a corpse."
  • "I am protecting the patient from an unpeaceful death."
  • "The patient can decide."
  • "Progress beats identity."
  • "Life is complicated: he [the colleague] is an anti-Semitic asshole, but he's the best."
  • "Am I a doctor, am I human? ... I think I'm more of a doctor."

Respect and trust, interprofessional collaboration and professionalism are part of the medical role and responsibility towards patients, the team and society. What values characterize "the doctor"? What significance does identity have for professional responsibility? What does identity mean for working together?

We invite you to a panel discussion with guests from the fields of medicine, nursing, ethics and pastoral care. Let's get into conversation after the performance.
