Graphic novel "Toxic" by Dr. Fiske wins PROSE Award

Association of American Publishers honors scientific publications

The Association of American Publishers (AAP) has announced the 101 finalists and 37 category winners for the 49th annual PROSE Awards (PROSE stands for "Professional and Scholarly Excellence"), which will honor professional and scholarly publications published in 2024. In the "Nonfiction Graphic Novels" category, the book "Toxic: A Tour of the Ecuadorian Amazon" by IGEM employee Dr. Amelia Fiske and graphic designer Jonas Fischer won.

"The finalists and category winners of the 2025 PROSE Awards are a clear indication of the deep commitment of trade and scholarly publishers," said Syreeta Swann, Chief Operating Officer of the AAP. "We congratulate all 101 finalists and 37 category winners and look forward to recognizing their incredible contributions to their fields and to publishing as a whole."

"This year's award winners cover a wide range of academic fields and research topics with incredible skill and exemplify the complexity and diversity of scientific publishing," commented PROSE Awards head judge, Dr. Nigel Fletcher-Jones. "We eagerly await the announcement of the winners of the PROSE Awards for Excellence 2025 and our top prize, the R.R. Hawkins Award, all of which embody the spirit of PROSE.

The 37 category winners are now eligible for the next stage of the PROSE awards - the Awards for Excellence, which will be announced in the coming weeks.

The Awards for Excellence consist of the following four awards:

  •    PROSE Award 2024 for outstanding achievements in the biosciences and life sciences
  •    PROSE Award 2024 for outstanding achievements in the humanities
  •    PROSE Award 2024 for outstanding achievements in the natural sciences and mathematics
  •    PROSE Award 2024 for outstanding achievements in the social sciences
