SolPan - Solidarity in times of a pandemic?

"Solidarity in times of a pandemic". is an international and comparative longitudinal study to explore values and behavior and to learn more about people's responses to pandemic containment restrictions and measures. SolPan was initiated by the Center for the study of contemporary solidarity at the Institute of Political Science at the University of Vienna by Prof. Dr. Barbara Prainsack.
Today, SolPan is anchored in ten European countries. In addition to Austria, Germany and German-speaking Switzerland, Belgium, France, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and, since summer 2021, Portugal are also involved.
Each of the participating countries of the SolPan consortium solicits independent claims and is responsible for them. Only the research instruments and investigation methods were coordinated jointly. There is no overarching third-party funding for the entire collaborative project. The funding institutions are listed together with the conflicts of interest in the respective publications.

Subproject
The following Research questions are being investigated by the SolPan consortium:
- What are the main value-based motivations and obstacles for taking or not taking action and for mutual support? How do these change over the course of the pandemic?
- How do people deal with the limitations and challenges during the pandemic? What role does technology play in times of uncertainty?
- What causes behavior to change and what values, motives, experiences are associated with it?
- What supports solidarity between people, groups and socially, and what factors act as barriers to solidarity?
For part of the project duration (July 2020 - December 2021), the research team at the Institute for the History and Ethics of Medicine (IGEM) at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) was supported by third-party funding from the BMBF (Project ID 01KI20510). In the first project year (April 2020 - April 2021), the German and Swiss project branches were conducted jointly at TUM. The project funds were used to finance interviews in Germany and German-speaking Switzerland in October 2020 and for Germany in October 2021.
As of April 2021, the Swiss part of the project split off and the German-Swiss part in October 2021 was funded and carried out with separate funds by the University of Basel in Switzerland.
