Monograph published: Maximilian Bushman "The Invention of the Hunger Strike. A Transnational History, 1880-1950."

Dr. Maximilian Buschmann's dissertation, which was awarded the 2022 Dissertation Prize of the Bavarian America Academy, has just been published as a book by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht Verlag.

In it, Buschmann examines the emergence and establishment of the hunger strike as one of the most significant forms of protest in the present day from a transnational perspective with a focus on the USA. The comprehensive study ranges from the beginnings of this political protest at the end of the 19th century to the reception of Gandhi's resistance in the U.S. in the mid-20th century and deals with both the practice of the hunger strike itself and the actors who chose it as a means.

The work was shortlisted for the 2023 Hedwig Hintze Prize of the Association of Historians of Germany (VHD).
