Dr. Daniel Tigard
Research associate
Dr. Daniel Tigard is a research associate at the Institute for History and Ethics of Medicine at the Technical University of Munich (TUM).
His research addresses topics in ethical theory, such as moral dilemmas and moral responsibility, and applications to issues in medicine and technology. In particular, he is working to develop a new understanding of responsibility for technological systems, for their developers, and for ourselves with respect to our use of new technologies. In addition to this conceptual work, Dr. Tigard's interdisciplinary research aims to understand social and ethical values held by various stakeholders during technological development, both within and outside the medical environment.
His teaching aims to make a real-world impact in important areas ranging from health care to everyday human-machine interaction. He works to help others critically analyze and apply ethical theories to complex practical scenarios, but also to recognize the limitations of theories and overarching principles. Accordingly, he takes an embedded ethics approach that aims to expose ethical values from the ground up and build skills to identify and solve moral problems. He particularly enjoys working with medical students, engineering teams, and industry developers working on AI or robotics technologies.
Together with members of the Munich School of Robotics and Machine Intelligence (MSRM) and the TUM Chair of Science, Technology and Society, Dr. Tigard is working on the project "Responsible Robotics: Tracing Ethical and Social Aspects of AI-Based Transformations in Healthcare Work and Knowledge Environments."
